Ungarra is a small farming community on Barngarla country in the District council of Tumby Bay.
The existing playcentre mural was voted by the committee that it needed updating. I was approached to do the mural.
I wanted a simple fun calming mural, for what is already a busy space for the kids and parents.
Ungarra is surrounded by beautiful hills and farmland with a promenant small hill in view. After two designs were presented, this was the design the committee chose.
The mural wraps around the shed, and flows into each other depending on what angle it is viewed from.
“The path leads to Ungarra silos. The plane and header are representative of the different seasons of growth. The hill an iconic hill in Ungarra.
The sunset and birds represent a time when the children that grew at this playcentre or primary school will have matured and be ready to finish their time here, and fly off freely to their next adventure.
Georgia, the playcentre director said this about the mural, “Simply put, what a wonderful job Rebecca Palmer has done. Rebecca has managed to create the masterpiece amongst the weather, family commitments, and a crazy time of the year all while having playcentre children assisting in the process. The mural is vibrant in colour and meaning, and is inspired by the beautiful landscape, colours and hills surrounding Ungarra. The mural reflects the growth of playcentre children with the love and care from nurturing bodies. The mural perfectly captures and showcases Ungarra in all its beauty.”
The title of the mural is “Grow” and was completed Dec 2022.
